Essay: "My Face." Robert Benchley.

One-minute review: Each day the author looks in the mirror and each day the image changes. He is also fascinated when photographs are passed around to see himself as others see him.

Ideas:

“Each day I look like someone or something different.”

“This almost masochistic craving to offend my own aesthetic sense by looking at myself and wincing….”

“My only hope is that, in this constant metamorphosis which seems to be going on….”

“…Mother Nature’s gift for caricature….”

Great Essays. Ed. Houston Peterson. New York: Washington Square Press, Inc. 1960.

What is an essay? “They are all prefaces. A preface is nothing but a talk with the reader; and they [essays] do nothing else.” Charles Lamb.
